“Based on images from Greek mythology, ‘Icarus On Elysian Fields’ retraces the steps of the writer from his former home in New Orleans in the Irish Channel, down Camp Street and into the heart of the Vieux Carre. This touchingly bittersweet monologue seeks to explore the ideas of loss and hopeful rebirth, juxtaposed against metaphors of water, wind and waves. Deeply rooted in the cultural traditions and religious iconography of New Orleans, the senses of the narrator are flooded with imagery that surrounded the residents of the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, sights still blazing on the retinas of the survivors and those who now call other cities home. ‘Icarus On Elysian Fields’ was first performed by Timothy Gray at The Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans in 2006.
